Stones Throw Olive Grove Project

The retirement dream – to create a single level modern farmhouse overlooking an olive grove and beyond whilst making artisan olive oil.

The energy-efficient design of the Stones Throw Olive Grove home truly engages the environmental qualities of its surrounds while capturing natural light and picturesque views from every room.

With a modern, minimalist aesthetic, the house reflects an environmental consciousness, whilst its clean lines and strong form represents simplicity and architectural clarity.  A robust material palette of concrete and stainless steel has been coupled with reclaimed timbers and colours that reflect the surrounding olive grove to impart a natural effect.

Full height double glazed windows frame westerly views of the olive grove while a 1200mm eave overhang provides solar protection. The design demonstrates how adapting to a challenging site orientation and capitalising on the constraints of the site can result in favourable design outcomes. The house represents a perfect harmony between design, inhabitant and environment.

Passive Solar design principals have been carefully considered to reduce the home’s carbon footprint. Utilising building mass, double glazing, shading and cross-flow ventilation reduces the reliance on artificial heating and cooling. The home was designed to also include an energy-efficient hot water system, independent water supply and maximum-rated fixtures and fittings. These features further reduce the home’s carbon footprint and reflect the client’s environmental sentiment for off-grid living.
